KREC- Arctic University Norway, New Mexico Tech Cooperation

KREC establish cooperation with University of Tromsø, now Arctic University through joint proposals to Normin, Nordic research council and Norwegian Science Foundation. This cooperation is to establish a mining environmental teaching program jointly with New Mexico Tech, Socorro, NM, USA as well as for Queen University, Canada. KREC organized funding via Mineral Cluster Norway to have two representatives from Narvik (the technology faculty of the Arctic University of Norway) visiting New Mexico Tech and Chair of the Mining Department at New Mexico tech will visit Narvik. Dr. Walder visiting professor at New Mexico Tech is instrumental in getting this cooperation. going. This is now followed up by Dr. Jinmei Lu, Assoc. Prof. Environmental Engineering, Arctic Univ.

KREC DELEGATES TO THE GOLDSCHMIDT CONFERENCE, PRAGUE, CHECK REPUBLIC AUGUST 2015,

Dr. Ingar Walder and Rodrigo Embile, employee of KREC and PhD student at New Mexico Tech, Socorro, NM, USA are both attending the Goldschmidt Conference

in August 2015, in Prague, Check republic. Dr. Walder is presenting research work on nickel leaching of tailings from Titania Mine, Norway.

BOLIVIAN MINE WASTE CHARACTERISATION GUIDELINE DEVELOPED BY DR. WALDER AND DIMA IS BECOMING A NATIONAL GUIDELINE

In co-operation with the DIMA staff, Dr. Walder developed guidelines for sampling and characterisation together with a system of comparing the level of contamination and a cost benefit system to evaluate the most effective mitigation for the different sites. Read the full story

NUSSIR SUB-SEA TAILINGS DISCHARGE APPLICATION

Nussir ASA has applied for discharge permit for tailings in the Repparfjorden, in the Kvalsund township, Northern Norway. As a part of the application a environmental impact assessment was presented in June 2011. KREC was contracted to perform additional work to evaluate the leaching potential for tailings potentially deposited in the fjord. The work was limited to running sea water kinetic tests and evaluate the leaching rate on a short term and long term basis. The work was submitted to the Nussir ASA in March and published via GEO news (KREC Report). The report indicates a short term leaching rate primarily related to the deposition process and a long term leaching rate related to the area of the tailings placement. The work will be presented at the Goldschmidt 2013 Conference i Florence, Italy this August.

KREC is also initiating a PhD study with the basis of this investigation and investigations at the old tailings from Nickel-Olivine AS in Balangen Norther Norway. The investigation will be funded by Forskningsrådets Nærings PhD program and KREC.

Sub-Sea Tailings Deposition Evaluation Guideline

STRONG INCREASE IN MINING ENVIRONMENTAL RESEARCH AT KREC

Over the last seven years Kjeøy Research & Education Center (KREC) has conducted research on Acid/Neutral Rock Drainage (A/NRD) associated with mining activities and is the leading organization on A/NRD research in Norway. KREC has supported two MSc students one PhD student and is currently supporting one MSc (Univ. Oslo, Norway) and one PhD student (Univ. Miskolc, Hungary). Through two new PhD students, KREC is increasing the research on A/NRD issues from improving prediction methods, performing mineral solubility studies, to evaluating improved reclamation processes. The current budget for this research is approximately 10 mill. NOK over the next 3 years. The project is supported by the Skattefunn Program (Norwegian tax relief program for research), however, KREC is seeking other sponsors for this research and, as well as, sponsors to further increase the mining environmental research program at KREC.
